Surface water quality management, ecological engineering of the water environment, biological nitrogen removal

Research Experience:

Pro.Chi-Chin Hwang early research focused on water quality modeling of rivers and estuaries, using water quality models such as WASP, QUAL2E, HSPF and others. During the 1990s, his research was mainly on non-point source pollution from both urban area and highways. Works performed including runoff monitoring, water quality
analysis, and application of mathematical models such as SWMM and STORM. Since the early 2000s till
the present, his research has focused mainly on ecological engineering, including the application of natural
systems for the treatment of municipal wastewater, and the treatment of highway runoff using buffer strips.
His research topic during the past 5 years has been the biological nitrogen removal through simultaneous
nitrification and denitrification (SND) using natural medium such as oyster shells.
